As makers of metal coat racks, we often get questions about these versatile storage pieces. Whether you're planning to add one in your entryway, bathroom, or mudroom, we've got tips to help!
Here, we’ll cover some basics like how high to mount a coat rack, how many hooks you might need, and a few DIY installation ideas. Plus, we’ll share a few design tips to make sure your coat rack is as practical as it is stylish.
1. How high should a coat rack be?
Typically, coat racks are about 5' from the floor. This makes it easy for most people to reach.
2. How many coat hooks do I need?
For entryway coat racks, we find that one hook per person in the household works well plus one extra for guests.
When using in the bathroom, typically only one per person or fewer for smaller spaces.
In areas like the laundry room or mudroom, more hooks might be needed to accommodate sports gear, backpacks, or heavy coats.
3. How to build a coat rack?
While we make entire metal coat rack systems, it's also really easy to build a coat rack.
Many people use a piece of common lumber, such as a 2 x4 and attach directly to the wall. We'd recommend installing into wall studs.
Then, with even spacing, attach metal wall hooks along the piece of lumber. We suggest 6" - 9" spacing depending on type of items used.
4. Can I add hooks to wall trim?
Yes, hooks can be added to wall trim such as board and batten to create an overall finished coat rack design.
This works well to define a space as a storage area. It's just important to choose the correct hardware for solid wood trim.
